Anthropic launches Claude for Chrome research preview
Anthropic this week opened a research preview for Claude for Chrome, a browser-based AI agent available first to 1,000 subscribers on its Max plan and to others via a waitlist. The extension creates a sidecar chat window that preserves context from the tabs you have open and, with permission, can take actions inside the browser to help complete tasks.
This launch places Anthropic squarely in the growing browser-agent race. Perplexity has shipped Comet, an AI-first browser with task-offloading built in; OpenAI is reported to be close to a similar product; and Google has been integrating Gemini into Chrome. For AI labs, the browser is becoming the most direct way to connect models to real user workflows.
The timing matters: an ongoing antitrust case could force changes to Chrome's ownership, and companies including Perplexity and OpenAI have signaled interest in acquiring the browser. That geopolitical backdrop accelerates the strategic importance of owning browser-level interaction.
Anthropic is explicit about the risks. Browser agents can read page content and respond to hidden instructions embedded on sites, creating prompt-injection vectors. Brave's security team previously flagged a vulnerability in Perplexity's Comet agent that could enable indirect prompt injection; Perplexity says that issue was fixed.
To mitigate those threats, Anthropic says it has implemented multiple defenses and is using the preview to surface novel attack patterns. The company reports reducing prompt-injection success from 23.6% to 11.2% through interventions and policy controls.

Practical next steps for teams evaluating Claude-like agents include threat modeling for prompt-injection, staged rollouts with whitelists and permission gates, and continuous red-team testing. Think of a browser agent like a new employee: it can speed work if trained and supervised, but it needs clear access boundaries and auditing.
Anthropic's research preview will be a test bed for other labs' approaches to safety controls and user experience.
