Anduril Expands Edge Computing with Klas Acquisition and Menace-T Launch

Anduril has acquired Dublin-based Klas, specialists in ruggedized edge computing for military and first responders, integrating their Voyager systems with Anduril’s Lattice AI software. Alongside this, Anduril introduced Menace-T, a portable edge compute and communications system designed for rapid deployment in challenging environments. This technology supports projects like the military’s IVAS VR headset, enhancing real-time data processing and tactical communication. While focused on defense, these innovations hold promising commercial applications in automotive, industrial, and environmental sectors.

Anduril Technologies has announced its ninth acquisition with the purchase of Klas, a Dublin-based company specializing in ruggedized edge computing equipment tailored for military and first-responder applications. This strategic acquisition, pending regulatory approval, brings approximately 150 employees into Anduril’s fold and strengthens its foothold in edge computing hardware.

Klas’ flagship product, Voyager, is a ruggedized family of compute and networking systems that had already been integrated with Anduril’s Lattice software platform. Lattice leverages AI and sensor fusion to enable advanced object identification and situational awareness, crucial for modern battlefield and emergency response scenarios.

Alongside the acquisition, Anduril unveiled Menace-T, a compact and portable edge computing and communications system that fits into two carry cases and can be deployed by a single operator within minutes. Designed for off-grid and inhospitable environments, Menace-T is already operational in military ground vehicles and maritime vessels, highlighting its versatility and ruggedness.

A notable application of Menace-T is its support for the U.S. military’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), a VR headset project initially developed by Microsoft. Despite early challenges, Anduril took over the contract and integrated Lattice AI capabilities to enhance object detection and classification. Menace-T’s rugged edge computing addresses IVAS’s historic issues with reliable data processing and tactical communications, enabling soldiers to send and receive critical data and command autonomous systems effectively.

Beyond military uses, the edge computing technology developed by Klas and enhanced by Anduril holds significant potential across various commercial sectors. These include automotive systems requiring real-time processing, industrial automation, and environmental monitoring such as pollution tracking. While Anduril’s current focus remains on defense and law enforcement, the underlying technology is adaptable to a broad range of applications demanding robust, low-latency computing at the edge.

Tom Keane, Anduril’s Senior Vice President of Engineering, emphasized the broad applicability of Klas’s technology, highlighting its use cases in military, national security, law enforcement, and autonomous systems. This acquisition and product launch demonstrate Anduril’s commitment to advancing edge computing capabilities that empower tactical operations and open pathways for future commercial innovations.
