Android 16 Launches with Features but Material 3 Expressive Delayed

Google recently launched Android 16, bringing a suite of new features to Pixel devices first. While the update introduces useful enhancements such as Live Updates with progress-centric notifications and improved settings for users with hearing aids, the much-anticipated Material 3 Expressive redesign has been postponed.

Originally expected to debut with Android 16, Material 3 Expressive will now launch on September 3rd, 2025. This redesign promises refreshed icon shapes, updated type styles, and vibrant color palettes, all enhanced with more natural, springy animations that aim to elevate the Android user interface experience.

Developers and users can preview some Material 3 Expressive elements in the Android 16 QPR1 beta, with more design updates expected in the upcoming QPR1 Beta 2. This phased rollout allows Google to refine the user experience before the full launch.

Another highlight in the pipeline is Android’s desktop mode, which builds upon Samsung’s DeX platform. Scheduled for a September release, this feature optimizes apps for large screens, supports resizing multiple app windows, and enables connection of phones and tablets to external displays for a desktop-like experience.

Currently, Pixel 8 and newer users can test desktop mode and other new features in the Android 16 beta. However, broader availability will come with future updates, giving developers time to adapt their applications for these enhancements.
