Android 16 brings Google's version of iPhone-style Live Activities, enabling real-time tracking of rides and food deliveries through persistent notifications. Android 16 has officially arrived, bringing a host of new features designed to enhance user experience and accessibility. One of the standout additions is Google's take on iPhone’s Live Activities, called Live Updates. This feature allows users to track the progress of rides and food deliveries in real-time through persistent notifications, making it easier than ever to stay informed without opening multiple apps.

Initially rolling out with ride-share and food delivery apps, Live Updates are already expanding. Users have spotted Google Maps integrating live updates for navigation in the Android 16 beta. On Samsung devices, these updates appear in the Now Bar, while Oppo and OnePlus phones display them as Live Alerts. This seamless integration ensures users can effortlessly monitor ongoing activities directly from their notification areas.

Android 16 also tidies up the notification drawer by automatically grouping alerts from the same app, reducing clutter and improving usability. This seemingly small change can significantly enhance how users interact with their devices daily.

Accessibility improvements are another major focus. For users wearing hearing aids, Android 16 introduces native controls that allow switching from the hearing device’s front-facing microphone to the phone’s microphone during calls. This change addresses the issue where hearing aids pick up external sounds rather than the user’s voice, improving call clarity. Users can also adjust volume and set default microphones directly through the device settings.

Security enhancements include the ability to enable Advanced Protection on phones, which safeguards at-risk users from malicious apps, unsafe websites, and online attacks. This feature underscores Google’s commitment to user safety in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

Developers can also look forward to a DeX-like desktop experience with custom keyboard shortcuts, currently in testing. This feature promises to enhance productivity by allowing Android devices to function more like traditional desktops when connected to external displays.

Other notable updates include:

  • Custom icons for RCS group chats in Google Messages and the ability to mute group notifications for set durations.
  • A redesigned editor in Google Photos rolling out to more devices, enhancing photo editing capabilities.
  • Extended Safety Check durations for added user control over emergency alerts.
  • Google Home updates that allow creating shortcuts for specific smart home devices, enabling quick access from Google TV or Wear OS smartwatches.
  • Wear OS improvements letting users tap city transit cards without opening Google Wallet.

Android 16 will first roll out to Pixel devices, with more Material 3 Expressive design updates coming to both Android 16 and Wear OS 6 later this year. These updates collectively demonstrate Google's commitment to making Android more intuitive, accessible, and integrated across devices.
