AllTrails Launches AI-Powered Peak Membership for Custom Hiking Experiences

AllTrails, the acclaimed hiking and biking app named 2023’s iPhone App of the Year, is enhancing its service with a new premium membership called Peak. Priced at $80 per year, Peak introduces advanced AI-powered features designed to elevate the outdoor experience for hikers and bikers worldwide.

The Peak membership offers a suite of innovative tools including AI-driven custom route creation, enabling users to design trails from scratch or modify existing ones to be shorter, less steep, or more scenic. This smart-routing functionality leverages artificial intelligence to personalize outdoor adventures based on individual preferences and conditions.

In addition to route customization, Peak members gain access to real-time trail condition forecasts that provide detailed weather insights such as temperature, precipitation, and snow depth. The feature also includes alerts on air quality and mosquito activity, with future updates planned to incorporate terrain and ground condition data like pavement or mud.

A notable addition is the trail traffic heatmap, which uses aggregated user activity data to estimate crowd levels on trails. This helps users avoid congestion or seek company for safety, enhancing both convenience and security during outdoor excursions.

Launching this summer, the Outdoor Lens feature will allow Peak members to identify trees, plants, and flowers instantly using their phone cameras, logging discoveries within the app. This tool will expand over time to include more identification capabilities, enriching the educational aspect of outdoor activities.

AllTrails is also updating its Base and Plus memberships. The free Base tier continues to offer trail maps, community reviews, and navigation, now enhanced with Points of Interest—over 500,000 mapped landmarks and amenities. Plus subscribers will receive Offline Area downloads for high-resolution maps and detailed offline exploration.

This strategic upgrade comes as AllTrails faces increased competition from Apple Maps, which has integrated topographic maps, offline capabilities, and custom routing features. By leveraging AI and exclusive features, AllTrails aims to retain its dedicated user base and continue leading in outdoor adventure technology.
